Gadis Kretek

            Jeng yah! Jeng Yah! The curses name that always called by Mr. Raja. His son, Lebas, Karim, and  Tegar confused what should they do. His wife, the woman who take care of Mr. Raja while he was sick is so angry to hear to that bloody name. The name who was taken their prosperity from its passion. The name that always bring memory with their sorrow.

            The name that bring their son take a journey to the palm of Java historical moment. The name that force three brothers acquire their family company’s secret. It’s not just about love, affair, and cigarettes. It’s also about passion, willing, taste, and business struggle. Will time reveal the secret of Jeng Yah’s name?

2.      Format Analysis

2.1              Plot

                        This story using forward-backward-forward plot. We believe that Ratih Kumala was deliberate to using this in order to made this story more interesting and made the reader.

                      The reader could also suspect what kind of scene that really happened in the past with including other scenes which revealed sistematically by Ratih Kumala. Indonesian history about colonize and independence were included into this novel and covered with continous and connected every single scene to be an interesting plot.

2.2              Character and Characterization                                                                                                                       

                                                                                                                                                    Lebas: he’s a free man, he does whatever he wants, he doesn’t want to be someone that his  father want him to be like his brothers. He is a spontaneous man. But he care to his family.

Tegar: he’s kind of man who take everything seriously, he’s sensitive, he’s character is contradiction with his little brother, Lebas that’s why they always fight each other. But he’s so obedient to his parents even he is cannot express his own interest.

Karim: he’s low profile and mature man, he’s smart, he’s always be a mediator between Lebas and Tegar.

Soeraja: he’s a hard worker, he’s kind of man who cannot fulfill his promise, he’s a thief, he doesn’t know what is the meaning of thanks, and he’s liar.

Dasiyah (Jeng Yah): she’s a hard worker, smart, obedient, innovative, and loyal woman.

Rukayah: she’s  followers her sister and she is kind woman.

Soedjagad: He’s a plagiator and he’s a liar, and he’s coward.

Idroes Moeria: he’s a hard worker, loyal, jealous man and loves his wife so much.

Roemaisa: she’s smart, loyal, hard worker, lovely, respectful, friendly,  she’s tough and patient woman.

Dennis’s judge: Gadis Kretek is the best novel i’ve ever read. It has a strong conflict, difficulity comprehension of love.
